P+PB online show emphasizes packaging recyclability

Paperboard trade group has produced four new episodes of “Pack It!,” an online show documenting how two designers create new paper-based packaging concepts.

The McLean, Virginia-based Paper & Packaging Board (P+PB) has posted four new episodes of its video series “Pack It! The Packaging Recycling Design Challenge."

Pack It! is a competition show where designers go head to head to create the most recyclable and earth friendly packaging solutions.

According to P+PB, challenges depicted on the show emphasize sustainability, requiring contestants to use only eco-friendly, paper-based materials that can be recycled up to seven times.

In one new episode, host Cassie Stephens enlists the help of former contestants Emma Dayton and Zachary Weston to solve a packaging dilemma involving her cats, as the duo go head-to-head to create sustainable and functional cat-friendly packaging.

“The two talented designers have a history of friendly but intense rivalry dating back to their student days, most recently competing to create the best produce delivery box for Miami Fruit,” P+PB says.

Both Dayton and Weston are now professional packaging designers. Throughout the new four-episode series, the duo showcase their "unique creative processes," from initial brainstorming and sketching to final assembly.

“Innovative paper and cardboard packaging solutions are in high demand, driven by sustainability advocates and conscious consumers,” says Mary Anne Hansan, president of the P+PB. “In fact, according to recent research, the preference for paper-based product packaging is at an all-time high."
